Nómadas
Leandro Roco & Yoandy Jimeno
Nómadas was formed through a shared passion for music. It has been a channel to express, feel and connect throughout our lives even when the surroundings, people and consequences change. We play music from South America, telling stories with our voices, guitar and percussion.
Leandro Roco (he/him) is a musician and dancer from Argentina. He comes from a musical family and begun playing music at fourteen. Leandro studied music for four years and has worked with different styles of music and dance.
Argentina, its music and culture are a very important part of Leandro’s identity: ”Tango and Argentine folklore are especially close to my heart.”
Yoandy Jimeno (they/he) is a Cuban-Finnish musician, actor and performer. They come from a multicultural musical family and so their journey with performing begun in early childhood. Later Yoandy ventured into dance and expanded their knowledge across the arts. Being part of different bands a projects whilst navigating the field with a multidimensional approach from the perspective of a 2.5 generation immigrant, genderfluid queer is a quintessential part of Yoandy’s artistic identity.
IYABÓ is a Helsinki-based ensemble bringing together AfroCuban and AfroColombian music, jazz, rhythm and improvisation. The name Iyabó carries roots in the AfroCuban spiritual tradition, referring to a new beginning. a journey of learning, transformation, connection and relationship with the spiritual and ancestral world.
These ideas are reflected in Iyabó’s music: a meeting point between tradition and improvisation, roots and contemporary expression, individual musicians and collective energy.
The band’s sound is vibrant, rhythmic and deeply connected to the spirit of live performance, drawing from Afro Cuban and Afro diasporic musical traditions while leaving space for jazz improvisation and spontaneous musical dialogue.
Iyabó is about connection to rhythm, to ancestry, to each other and to the audience.
